Genioplasty

Chin implant and augmentation in Tampa, FL

Improve your facial profile just by strengthening your jawline. For both men and women, a strong chin can help create facial harmony by beautifully balancing other features. Genioplasty, more commonly known as a “chin augmentation” or “chin implant” is the surgical procedure used to improve your profile.

Chin implants should be customized to every patient, which is why it’s so important to work with an experienced facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Farrior. Request your pre-surgical consultation today.

  • Chin surgery, also known as genioplasty, can be done to move a recessed chin forward, balance an asymmetrical chin, or reduce a large chin.
  • Without any other additional procedures, this type of chin augmentation only takes around 1 hour to complete.
  • The recovery time is short compared to other cosmetic procedures. Many patients are able to return to work after just 24 hours. Results will appear close to final after just one month, and complete recovery is expected within three months.
  • Because the only incision is underneath the chin or in the mouth, this procedure does not leave behind any noticeable scarring.
  • The implant itself is compressed Teflon, a material that is natural-looking and well-tolerated by the human body. Each Teflon implant is custom-made to perfectly fit our patients.
  • Our durable implants are designed to last for life. Unless you experience some type of trauma that damages the implant, it should never need to be replaced.
  • The procedure can be performed with local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the needs of the patient.

Chin implants add height to the jaw area, as well as projection. Chin augmentation also increases the length of the jawline, enhancing your facial angles. For these reasons, the procedure can also be performed to enhance the results from a facelift or cervical liposuction.

As for the implant itself, Dr. Farrior prefers to use ones made from compressed Teflon (also known as Gore-Tex). This material is extremely well tolerated, natural in its texture and incorporated by the adjacent tissue making it a very stable implant. Each chin implant is custom designed for the patient to meet their individual needs.

  • Chin implants have longer recovery times than fillers.
  • Chin implants are almost always a one-time procedure with life-long results. Fillers must be reinjected multiple times to obtain the desired results.
  • A chin implant has a higher upfront cost than a filler.
  • While the side effects of implants and fillers can be similar (swelling, bruising, numbness, etc), the side effects of injectable fillers are milder and go away faster.

Because injectable fillers are less permanent, have shorter recovery times, and cost less, many patients choose to try fillers first and before committing to an implant. What works for one person may not work for you, which is why it’s important to meet with Dr. Farrior face to face so that he can determine the appropriate approach for you.

We believe in being open and honest with our patients and giving them the information they need to make informed decisions about cosmetic procedures. During your consultation, Dr. Farrior will make sure you are educated on every aspect of your chin implant, from the risks involved to what you can expect on the actual day of surgery. The chin implant consultation is complementary.

Another benefit of solid implants over injectable chin implants is how easy they are to personalize. For instance, if a patient’s facial features are asymmetrical and require more augmentation on either the left or the right, the implant can be shaped to balance that out. Do note that Gore-Tex implants are not as easily reversible as silicone. During your consultation, Dr. Farrior will go over the pros and cons of both options and work with you to create a perfect, long-lasting fit that you are happy with.

  • You may be asked to stop or adjust certain medications prior to surgery. Dr. Farrior will tell you specifically which medications and supplements to avoid.
  • Stop smoking tobacco products at least 6 weeks in advance. Tobacco inhibits the body’s natural ability to heal.
  • You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery. Plan this around the fact that a typical chin augmentation takes around 1 hour. If you plan on having additional work done, communicate this with the person driving you well in advance.
  • It’s always a good idea to bring the spouse, family member, or friend who will support you after surgery to your consultation. This way, they will be better equipped to help you through the recovery process.

There is a dressing in place on the chin for four-five days after surgery. This helps to reduce swelling and stabilize the chin implant. Your chin will appear swollen for 10-21 days and may remain tender for up to three months. There are no sutures that need to be removed, and you can return to work as early as 24 hours after surgery.
