BLEPHAROPLASTY

  1. Keep your incision lines dry for the first 48 hours, with exception of the cleaning instructions below.
  2. Clean your incision lines with peroxide and a Q-tip, twice daily and as needed. Gently roll the moistened Q-tip along the incision lines. Avoid getting the peroxide in your eyes. After each cleaning, apply a thin film of Polysporin Opthalmic Ointment. If a rash develops, discontinue use. The ointment may cause temporary blurring of vision, but this will clear. If your vision is extremely blurred, you may be using too much ointment. Only a thin film is needed to keep the area moist.
  3. Use an ice pack for the first 48 hours (20 minutes every waking hour). Cold packs, crushed ice, or frozen green peas in zip-lock bags work well.
  4. Please call the doctor immediately if you experience severe pain in either eye, a significant change of vision, a fever above 101 degrees, or increased swelling of your eyelids.
  5. PLEASE BRING YOUR MEDICATION TO SURGERY. Take all of your medications as directed. It is important to complete your antibiotic prescription. Continue to take 1000mg of Vitamin C three times per day, and Arnica for two weeks after surgery (Arnica may contain lactose and sucrose).
  6. Please do not take aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, or herbal supplements for three weeks prior to and after your surgery. The use of these products may increase bleeding. You may take Extra Strength Tylenol for discomfort.
  7. Do not irrigate or use anything in your eyes unless medically directed.
  8. Sleep with your head elevated for two weeks after surgery. A recliner or two pillows usually work nicely.
  9. Do not rub your eyes after surgery, and do not wear contact lenses for at least two weeks after surgery.
  10. You may start wearing flesh colored makeup two weeks after surgery. The incision lines may still be slightly red, tender, and irregular for some time after surgery. Makeup will help camouflage this. Mascara and colored eye shadow may not be worn for three weeks after surgery.
  11. Protect the operated area with sunblock and wear a hat when possible. Unprotected exposure to the sun may thicken the incision lines and affect the final result. Please protect all of your skin with the routine use of sunscreen.
  12. Initially, you may experience sensitivity to sunlight; this is normal and will pass with time. We recommend sunglasses be worn, especially immediately postoperatively.
  13. Please do not hesitate to call our office with any questions or concerns at 813 875 3223.
